Initially, the solo bedroom project of Tom Brierley, Beige Banquet began with their debut album, Beta. With its DIY bedroom recordings of wirey guitars, unquestioning drum machines, and anxious vocal hooks, it would serve as the detailed schematic for the Beige Banquet sound.
However, Beige Banquet was never intended to be confined to Brierley’s isolated London flat. Growing into a formidable five-piece with the additions of Ian Crafter (Drums), Joe Munsey (Guitar and Vocals), Danny Gillies (Bass), Blake Carlson-Joshua (Percussion, synth, vocals), the band, helmed by Brierley (Guitar and vocals), doggedly toured Europe, building their krautrock recordings into feverish live performances. Bringing their unmistakable and feverish energy to festivals such as London’s DIY Alive, Rotterdam’s Left Of The Dial, and France’s Binic Festival, they found themselves sharing stages with contemporaries such as Crack Cloud, Shame, and Liiek.
The band quickly followed up Beta with two more releases. A self-titled four-track EP found the sounds of the first album continued but developed with a more dynamic and innovative approach. Then, on the aptly titled Live! Live! Live! live album, the band presented the first recording of the full band trading in drum machines for dogmatic live drums and enhancing their already agile layers of guitars and percussion over saturated basslines.
